Housing associations are not-for-profit organisations that own and manage homes controlled by management committees made up of volunteers, including residents.

Able to raise finance through loans from banks and building societies

There are over 2,000 such associations in the UK. Together they account for well over a million homes. Some are registered charities, some are not.

Housing associations work closely with local councils in order to house people in need and build new homes. Most housing associations belong to the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations www.sfha.co.uk National Housing Federation (www.housing.org.uk) and the Chartered Institute of Housing (www.cih.org).
